Chapters 1-5
Maddie C.
Chapter 1
Isabel goes through a lot in a short period of time after being sold. She has grueling ownership by Madam Lockton and her husband where she is treated unfairly, and her sister Ruth is sold away. From being branded, to Ruth being sold, Isabel has been through it all. She doesn't deserve any of this, but that’s the life of the slave, and sadly Isabel must learn to cope.

Chapter 3
This was a frightening ordeal for both girls, after Miss Mary Finch’s passing. Mr. Finch plans to sell the girls to new owners when they should have been freed like her will said, but because of the girls low, unimportant states, their concerns and rights were thrown out the window and forgotten about.

Chapter 5
The girls are still getting used to their new life with the Locktons. It’s hard for Ruth, because she does not understand that everything in their old life is gone. Even Isabel is having a hard time adjusting to the new way of doing everything. Unlike with Miss Mary Finch, she must hold her mouth and stand quiet like she doesn't exist, and that most certainly that goes against everything she believes in. Will Isabel ever learn?
